Electrolysis Hair Removal: The Ouch Factor!
Electrolysis hair removal is painful........
...it's also time-consuming as each hair follicle has to be targeted individually.
It involves inserting a sterilized needle into each hair follicle, at which point an electrical current is delivered to the base of the follicle, thus destroying the hair growth cells.
Each hair is then individually removed using tweezers.
The most popular areas of treatment include the upper lip, chin, sides of the face, eyebrows, breast area and bikini line (the most sensitive parts of the body).
Most of my clients, including men, undergo electrolysis after an IPL/Laser treatment to target those few scattered individual hairs. Some clients switch from laser to electrolysis to treat the grey hairs since the laser only works on dark hair.
The "only" good thing about electrolysis is that it’s suitable for all skin types and hair colours. Hence, if you're not a candidate for laser treatment, electrolysis may be a viable alternative.
If you prefer electrolysis then watch this short video of me doing electrolysis.

On the day of your consultation, you will be assessed to ensure that you are a suitable candidate for electrolysis.
You will be asked a number of questions about your medical background and whether you suffer from any medical conditions that may prevent you from having electrolysis.
If you suffer from any medical conditions, you will need to present a doctor’s note to our office before we can treat you.
If all is well, the area to be treated will be cleaned, and then a sterilized needle will be inserted into the hair follicle and a small electrical current delivered to the base. Once the hair has loosened, it will be removed individually with tweezers.
Some hair may need to be treated twice before it is removed. If you feel a pulling sensation, the hair has not been treated successfully, as it should come out quite smoothly.
A few dark hairs around the chin area will take approximately 5 minutes to remove. Larger areas, especially when treating fine hairs such as the sides of the face, will take longer.
If you have many fine hairs, you will probably need to make several visits to achieve successful results.
At the end of the treatment, you will probably notice raised bumps and a reddening of the area. This is a natural reaction, and the redness should disappear after a couple of hours. A soothing lotion will also be applied to the area.
It is also probable that tiny scabs will form around the follicle opening. This is a normal reaction, but don’t try to pick these, as it will delay the healing process and may cause scarring.
Normally, you will attend the clinic on a weekly basis. Thereafter, when the hair growth starts to slow down, you can start coming in every two weeks and then every three weeks. Of course, your visit will depend entirely on your particular hair growth and the area to be treated.
Electrolysis Hair Removal Equipment and Technique
There are many different types of electrolysis hair removal equipment.
When you search for an electrologist, make sure that the individual uses a machine that performs the following three types of techniques to remove unwanted hair:
Galvanic Electrolysis – most often used for thick, coarse hair
Thermolysis – utilizes a high-frequency electrical current and is generally used on fine hair
Blend Method –combines galvanic electrolysis and thermolysis and tends to be used for facial hair removal
In my opinion, the most effective machine is the Aplius. Many of my clients who have previously undergone electrolysis elsewhere will notice a difference with this machine.
All clinic prices vary, according to how many minutes you choose. Normally, the minimum charge for up to 5 minutes of electrolysis on any area will be £5.
The following is an example of my prices:
5 minutes = £5
10 minutes = £8
15 minutes = £12
20 minutes = £18
30 minutes = £28
40 minutes = £38
60 minutes = £58
If you book a course of five treatments, you will receive 15% off the total price. Most clients choose this option as it works out much cheaper.
